IUBMB Enzyme Nomenclature

EC 2.1.1.124

Accepted name: [cytochrome c]-arginine N-methyltransferase

Reaction: S-adenosyl-L-methionine + [cytochrome c]-arginine = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + [cytochrome c]-Nω-methyl-arginine

Systematic name: S-adenosyl-L-methionine:[cytochrome c]-arginine Nω-methyltransferase

Comments: the enzyme from Euglena gracilis methylates Arg-38 of horse heart cytochrome c to form the Nω-monomethyl-arginine derivative. This enzyme was previously listed together with EC 2.1.1.25 phenol O-methyltransferase and EC 2.1.1.26 iodophenol O-methyltransferase as a single, now deleted, entry: Protein-arginine N-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.23).
