Comments: the enzyme from mammalian brain forms the N^ω-monomethyl-, N^ω,N^ω-dimethyl- and N^ω,N^ω'-dimethyl-arginine derivatives. The name protein methylase I is misleading since it has been used for a number of enzymes with different specificities.
