IUBMB Enzyme Nomenclature

EC 2.1.1.126

Accepted name: [myelin basic protein]-arginine N-methyltransferase

Reaction: S-adenosyl-L-methionine + [myelin basic protein]-arginine = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + [myelin basic protein]-Nω-methyl-arginine

Other name(s): myelin basic protein methylase I; protein methylase I

Systematic name: S-adenosyl-L-methionine:[myelin-basic-protein]-arginine Nω-methyltransferase

Comments: the enzyme from mammalian brain forms the Nω-monomethyl-, Nω,Nω-dimethyl- and Nω,Nω'-dimethyl-arginine derivatives. The name protein methylase I is misleading since it has been used for a number of enzymes with different specificities.
