IUBMB Enzyme Nomenclature

Accepted name: lupan-3β,20-diol synthase

Reaction: lupan-3β,20-diol = (3S)-2,3-epoxy-2,3-dihydrosqualene + H2O

For diagram of reaction click here.

Other name(s): LUP1 (gene name); (S)-squalene-2,3-epoxide hydro-lyase (lupan-3β,20-diol forming)

Systematic name: (3S)-2,3-epoxy-2,3-dihydrosqualene hydro-lyase (lupan-3β,20-diol forming)

Comments: The reaction occurs in the reverse direction. The recombinant enzyme from Arabidopsis thaliana gives a 1:1 mixture of lupeol and lupan-3β,20-diol with small amounts of β-amyrin, germanicol, taraxasterol and ψ-taraxasterol. See EC (lupeol synthase).
