IUBMB Enzyme Nomenclature

EC 6.1.1.25

Accepted name: lysine—tRNAPyl ligase

Reaction: ATP + L-lysine + tRNAPyl = AMP + diphosphate + L-lysyl-tRNAPyl

Glossary: pyrrolysine

Systematic name: L-lysine:tRNAPyl ligase (AMP-forming)

Comments: In organisms such as Methanosarcina barkeri that incorporate the modified amino acid pyrrolysine (Pyl) into certain methylamine methyltransferases, an unusual tRNAPyl, with a CUA anticodon, is charged with lysine by this class II aminoacyl—tRNA ligase. The tRNA and the ligase are encoded within the same gene cluster, and the ligase does not appear to be closely related to EC 6.1.1.6, lysine—tRNA ligase.
