This pathway of breakdown of purines goes as far as urate in primates and some other animals, and on to allantoate in many others. Legumes can transport nitrogen as allantoin and allantoate, and release ammonia by the reactions shown at the bottom of the scheme. Some of these are restricted to certain bacteria.
